This treatise on the materials science of fracture mechanics steers a middle ground between overly simple introductory texts and highly specialized treatments unsuitable for graduate students with little prior background. For the revised and expanded edition, outdated material has been dropped and an entirely new chapter on environmental cracking has been added. Otherwise, the structure of the work has remain unchanged with chapters discussing fundamental concepts related to linear elastic fracture mechanics, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, and dynamic and time-dependent fracture; fracture mechanisms in metals and nonmetals; and applications such as fracture toughness testing of metals, fracture testing of nonmetals, application to structures, fatigue crack propagation, and computational fracture mechanics. Practice problems for each of the preceding chapters are included in the final chapter. Annotation ¨Ï2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
